It was one of those moments where the marketing promises of 'AI-driven precision' felt like a personal insult, especially since Sam had already rescued the bot twice from the same rug fringe.
I didn’t start out as the person who weighs dustbins on a kitchen scale. That happened after my first Roomba i3 took a fatal, screaming tumble down the basement steps in early 2024. When you’re looking at clearance, remember that 1 inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters. Most high-end bots claim they can handle a 20mm threshold, but that’s in a lab. In reality, if your transition strips are near that limit, the bot will spend half its battery life humping the floorboard until it triggers a 'stuck' error. I’ve started measuring every doorway before I even unbox a new unit. If the bot can't clear the strip, the 'smart mapping' is basically just a map of where it’s going to die.
2. Is the 'AI Obstacle Avoidance' actually a hallucination machine?
Here is the truth that gadget bloggers won't tell you: if you have a minimalist home with lots of open floor space, advanced AI obstacle avoidance can actually be a liability. I noticed this early this spring while testing a flagship model. It kept slowing down and swerving around literally nothing. On a flat, empty floor, the extra sensors can trigger 'phantom errors'—the bot thinks a shadow or a slight change in wood grain is a pile of dog mess or a stray cable.
Unless you have a house littered with phone chargers and kids' toys, you might actually prefer a bot that relies more on LiDAR. LiDAR uses laser pulses to measure distance with incredible accuracy without overthinking a stray piece of lint. If your floor is usually clear, that 'advanced AI camera' is just another piece of hardware that can fail or get confused by the afternoon sun hitting your floors at a weird angle.
3. Does the app feel like a Sephora checkout flow?
As a UX writer, I spend my days trying to make software invisible. Most robot vacuum apps do the opposite. They treat you like a captive audience, forcing you through endless onboarding screens and 'discovery' tabs. One bot I tested required four separate firmware updates before it would even let me see the map. It felt like trying to buy a single lipstick and being forced to join a rewards program, sign up for a credit card, and take a skin-type quiz first.
Before you commit, check the app reviews. Does it make you log in every time? Does it lose the map if the Wi-Fi blips? Sam once watched me uninstall a companion app twice in ten minutes because it wouldn't let me set a 'no-go zone' around Beans’s water bowl without watching a tutorial video first. If the interface is a mess, you won't use the 'smart' features you paid for. 4. Can you clean the brush roll without a degree in surgery?

Look for rubberized rollers rather than traditional bristled ones. Bristles are hair magnets; they weave the fur into the roller until it’s a solid, felted mass. Rubber rollers tend to migrate the hair to the ends where it’s easier to pop off. Also, check the filtration. If you have allergies, you want a true HEPA filter. By definition, that means it must capture 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in size. If the marketing says 'HEPA-like' or 'High-Efficiency,' it’s a pass. 5. What is the 'Acoustic Fatigue' factor?
There’s a difference between 'suction power' on a spec sheet and how that noise actually feels when you’re trying to work from home. I use the NIOSH SLM app on my phone to check decibel levels, but the tone matters more than the volume. A high-pitched whine on hardwood is much more grating than a low hum on a runner rug.
One bot we tested last summer had a motor that sounded like a struggling jet engine.
